Reassessing Kant’s geography

چکیده

This article offers a critical reassessment of Immanuel Kant’s lectures on Physische Geographie and his contribution to geographical thought more generally. There are a number of reasons why this reassessment is needed: the lectures are finally about to be published in English translation; careful philological work in German has exposed how corrupted the standard text of the lectures is; and philosophers are finally beginning to critically integrate an understanding of the Geography into their overall assessment of Kant’s work. English speaking geographers will therefore soon have access to the lectures in a way that they have not done before, but they need to be aware both of the problems of the edition being translated and the work philosophers have undertaken on their situation in Kant’s work and their impact. More broadly, the reassessment requires us to reconsider the position Kant occupies in the discipline of geography as a whole. The article examines the history of the lectures and their publication in some detail; discusses Kant’s purpose in giving them; and looks at the way in which he structured geographical knowledge and understood its relation to history and philosophy. In terms of the broader focus particular attention is given to the topics of race and space. While these lectures are undoubtedly of largely historical interest, it is for precisely that reason that an examination of them and Kant’s thought more generally is of relevance today to the history of the discipline of geography. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Kant's Logic in the Critique of Practical Reason - a Logical Formalization of Kant's Practical Transcendental Argument Msc in Logic

Logic plays a fundamental role in Kant’s transcendental philosophy. The general presupposition is that Kant’s logic can be subsumed under the Aristotelian tradition. However, with respect to this presupposition some problems arise in Kant’s philosophy. This thesis takes a new approach to Kant’s logic: Instead of imposing a logical framework on Kant’s thought this thesis aims at deriving the log...

Institutions Do Not Rule: Reassessing the Driving Forces of Economic Development

We use cross-country data and instrumental variables widely used in the literature to show that (i) institutions (such as property rights and the rule of law) do not explain industrialization and (ii) agrarian countries and industrial countries have entirely different determinants for income levels. In particular, geography, rather than institutions, explains the income differences among agrari...

Kant’s Concepts of Justification

Epistemologists surveying the literature on “Kant’s epistemology” often feel at sea. Even bracketing differences in terminology and emphasis, Kant’s writing about knowledge can seem foreign to the contemporary discussion in a way that, for instance, Hume’s or Reid’s does not. Those working in Kant’s epistemology, on the other hand, dissect with great care his arguments about space and time as t...

Kant’s Model of Causality: Causal Powers, Laws, and Kant’s Reply to Hume

KANT’S VIEWS ON CAUSALITY have received an extraordinary amount of scholarly attention, especially in comparison with Hume’s position. For Hume presents powerful skeptical arguments concerning causality, yet Kant claims to have an adequate response to them. Since it turns out to be far from obvious what even the main lines of Kant’s response are, scholars have felt the need to clarify his posit...

If God's Existence Is Unprovable, Then Is Everything Permitted? Kant, Radical Agnosticism, and Morality

This essay is about how four deeply important Kantian ideas can significantly illuminate some essentially intertwined issues in philosophical theology, philosophical logic, the metaphysics of agency, and above all, morality. These deeply important Kantian ideas are: (1) Kant’s argument for the impossibility of the Ontological Argument, (2) Kant’s first “postulate of pure practical reason,” immo...
